ILEARN

What is ILEARN?

Indiana Learning Evaluation Assessment Readiness Network (ILEARN) is the summative accountability assessment required by state and federal legislation for Indiana students in grades 3 through 8. ILEARN measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana Academic Standards for:

  • English/Language Arts (Grades 3-8),
  • Math (Grades 3-8),
  • Science (Grades 4 & 6)
  • Social Studies (Grade 5)

CAES uses many methods to assess a child's learning and ILEARN is one way that teachers, schools, and the district analyze information about student growth and achievement.

More information can be found on the Indiana Department of Education's ILEARN website: https://www.in.gov/doe/students/assessment/ilearn/

What information can be found on my student's Individual Student Report?

An interpretive guide, which explains all of the sections of your student's Individual Student Report, can be found on the Indiana ILEARN resources page: https://ilearn.portal.cambiumast.com/resources/test-administrators-and-educators/ilearn-individual-student-report-interpretive-guide

ILEARN Checkpoints

Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, students in grades 3 through 8 will participate in three new ILEARN Checkpoints throughout the year. These are designed to provide timely insights into their progress in English/Language Arts (ELA) and Math. Science and Social Studies will continue with their end-of-year assessments.

What are ILEARN Checkpoints and why are they important?

These Checkpoints are short, online assessments given three times a year – in the fall, winter, and spring – leading up to the main ILEARN test in the spring.

  • Track Your Child's Progress: The Checkpoints help teachers and families understand how your child is progressing on key learning goals throughout the year. This timely information allows us to celebrate their successes and provide extra support where needed, right when it's most effective.
  • Focus on Key Skills: The Indiana Department of Education selects and communicates the specific Indiana Academic Standards that appear on each Checkpoint statewide. These assessments usually cover 4 to 9 key areas, offering a quick check of your child's progress. While we continuously refine our curriculum's pacing to help your child achieve proficiency by the end of the school year, the content on the Checkpoints may not always perfectly align with our instructional timeline. This means a skill might show up on a Checkpoint before we've fully explored it, or it could be something we teach earlier or later in the year. All essential Indiana Academic Standards will be assessed on the spring ILEARN assessment.
  • Assessment For Learning: It's important to know that these Checkpoints do not count towards your child's final ILEARN score or their proficiency level. They are simply tools to guide instruction and support your child's learning.

What do students experience on the ILEARN Checkpoints?

The ILEARN Checkpoints are online, computer-adaptive tests. This means the questions adjust to your child's answers, getting a little harder or easier as they go, allowing us to get a more precise understanding of their performance on the specific standards being tested.

  • Quick and Focused: Each Checkpoint has 20-25 questions and is designed for rapid results. They do not include open-ended writing questions or longer projects, which will still be part of the spring ILEARN assessment.
  • Support Features: Most of the helpful tools and accommodations available on the end-of-year ILEARN test (like text-to-speech) will also be available on the Checkpoints. Please note the state doesn’t provide this testing in a paper format.
  • Flexible Timing: Similar to the spring ILEARN test, Checkpoints are untimed and can be completed over multiple days if needed.

What skills and concepts are tested?

Each Checkpoint assesses specific skills and concepts from the Indiana Academic Standards. Generally, each standard will be assessed on only one Checkpoint throughout the year. While these Checkpoints provide a snapshot of learning, all standards serve as important goals for end-of-year proficiency.

How do I view my child’s results?

You will be able to view your child’s individual results through a secure family portal. This portal will not only show their scores but also provide explanations and links to helpful resources to support their learning at home. We will send out detailed instructions on how to access the family portal and view results later this school year
